I meant just to try copy and paste from xy into OO. Yes, I would just
boot dos and xywrite by themselves to write, then later boot linux to
fine edit, format, and print in OO. I think I can get dosemu to use the
actual dos partition where xy is installed, instead of creating it's own
little "c_drive" fake partition. Supposedly that's doable, although I
haven't yet accomplished it. I'm using the dosemu-freedos version, and
freedos on the C:\ partition.

Or do you just yearn for the simple

Freedos is a little more advanced than the old MS-DOS or even
PC-DOS, the version that IBM and Novell or whoever was using. It has apm
power management and monitoring. And there is the fast boot and turn off
issue, which saves battery and my time. Also the older IBM thinkpads
(what I have) seem to have a serious battery problem, in that not
discharging the battery all the way before recharging shortens battery
life immensely. So by using dos, I can drain the battery literally dead,
something neither linux nor windoze will let you do, they always have to
shut themselves down long before the battery is actually drained. Before
I thought of running dos this way, I was resorting to letting the laptop
sit in the bios setup to do the final battery drain.
