A few years ago, I did much the same as Robert has done; I went to T-
Mobile. I believe their overseas rates are very competitive, and
their domestic tariffs are among the lowest, especially their data
rates. I get virtually unrestricted internet access on my PDA for a
mere $5.95 per month addition to my bill. A local provider in
northern New England, Unicel, also has some good deals and the best
rural coverage in Maine (though as a T-Mobile subscriber I roam on
Unicel for free when necessary). AT&T has better coverage in some
areas of the country, but their tariffs are much higher as well.
Plus they like to sell you modified or locked phones -- less likely
to work on other providers. I prefer to buy my own, unlocked phone
independently and simply slip my T-Mobile SIM chip in it to make it
work. Make sure you get a quad-band phone so it works everywhere
outside North American with the possible exception of Japan.
