Foot- or Endnotes, converting

I created a paragraph with two notes, copied it over a dozen or so times,
and Saved As Word and WordPerfect, using the XyWrite for Windows
conversion filters. The WordPerfect one came through; the Word was a
mess, but when I ran the XyW original through the WordPort filter, that
came out readibly in Word. In any case, I should recommend you keep all
formatting to a bare minimum. Don't try to set hanging indents for your
notes (as I love to) and stick to Times New Roman, Courier New, or
Helvetica. But the italics (essential for notes if you're citing books)
and the note numbering came through, and they're what's essential. It
would be a good idea, though, to open the resulting file in Word or
WordPerfect and clean it up, if you have and know how to use those apps.
If not, see if you can find someone to do it for you, for scholarly
fellowship or a reasonable sum.
If you have to use WordPort, check if your version handles smart quotes
and em and en dashes correctly. Mine doesn't, so if I'm going to have to
run something through it, I use {} for single quotes, {{}} for double,
and and for the dashes(doing a CI at the end if I want--as I
usually do--to print my XyWrite original before finally sending it off).
Then I search and replace in WP or Word to get the right symbols.
WordPort seems to handle diacritics OK, thank heaven.
