Thanks, Lisa. The keyboard preferences did it. Apparently I had already done that on the older Air model. Despite the perverse changes they made in the new one, they haven't messed with that.

Jon,
I have an older Macbook Air. On the systems/keyboard menu there is an
option to use the function keys without pressing the fn key. Have they
changed that on the new Air?
