We are sad to announce that Emeritus Professor, Nathan Sivin, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, June 24, 2022. He had just turned 91 in May.
Dr. Sivin retired from the Department of the History and Sociology of Science at PENN in 2006. He was a member of the EALC Graduate Group and served on many committees. His passion was Chinese culture and, in particular, the social relations of Chinese medicine. Well after retiring, and as late as 2018, Dr. Sivin continued to work with graduate students, helping them to hone their dissertations, papers and conference presentations. He and his wife, Carole, who died in December 2020, were both close associates of the department.
