Michael,

I don't think you can include the period/space as part of the FM
command (though, if you want the first line of each note indented, you
*can* use an IP command as part of the FM formatting). Instead,
you can do a global change within each file:

CH /< I have some 60 footnotes in a first chapter. I want to print them as
