I think just getting the tags "out of the way" of the text, by condensing
them into little squares or whatever, would be a great help. (Especially
if these squares could themselves be suppressed in the view mode where
triangles are also invisible.) Of course interpreting these tags would be
nice, but not necessary -- what is really needed is to get the tags out
of the way, visually, so that editing can be done without "clutter".

Also, it would be possible for XPL routines to be created which
"validate" the tagging/document structure. Add this to the "hidden tags"
function and, voila! A powerful, validating HTML/XML/SGML editor. This
feature doesn't depend on your work hiding the tags in squares or
whatever, but the two functions together would make XyWrite a bold
contender indeed in the rising field of XML editors -- the validating
variety of editor can easily sell for $1,000.

And, if this sells well, you might be able to justify, from a
cost-benefit basis, the expenditure required to interpret those
angle-bracket commands.

Just some thoughts.
