Greetings,
On the off chance that anyone else on the list cares about the
problem I described associating file extensions with XyWin in the
windows file manager, I can report an easy and effective fix
provided promptly by the now very efficient people at TTG tech
support. (In case anyone missed the announcement TTG tech
support monitors this list and when there is a question directed
to them, or if there is a general question to which they can
provide assistance, they respond directly by email.)
When you install XyWin you are asked for a logon name (less than
eight characters). In my case it was "allan." XyWin creates a
allan.log file during install and places it in the xw program
directory. It also creates a xwstart.int file and inserts the
command, in my case, "logon allan" into the startup sequence.
All this is to allow for network installation and the possibility
of customized startups for multiple users. For stand alone
installation, the logon business is usually invisible (that is
when XyWin is started from the program manager icon). When,
however, you try to start XyWin from the file manager (or from a
command line in another program) XyWin can get confused.
Apparently, in the file manager case, XyWin looks for the
"allan.log" file in the directory that contains the file, and
can't follow the Dos path back to the xw program directory. The
fix, therefore, is simple. Copy the minuscule allan.log file
into each of the directories that contain (or might contain) file
you want to load automatically from file manger.
I tried it. It works. I have a "letters" subdirectory. With
allan.log in it. All the filename.let files can be called and
ready to edit simply by double clicking on the file in the
windows file manager.
PS. For ECCO users. (And this is what I really wanted) I can
now also insert file names as items in ECCO and launch them
directly in ECCO. That is a very nice and convenient feature.
PPS. I certainly appreciate TTGs decision to both to respect the
independent nature of this list by staying in the background and
letting us develop our own network and self help habits, and to
provide, as they can, competent help to XyWrite users. I notice
that traffic on the Compuserve IBMAPP forum is down considerably,
as this list becomes better used. I think both are worthwhile and
I am glad to see TTG's continued involvement.
