attachments

I'm mostly a lurker and get the listserv in digest format, but I'd echo
the uneasiness expressed here about attachments.

I don't like opening attachments when unnecessary, and was pleased when
the list digests were merely straight body text. I don't need or want the
fancy formats, and resent the apparently automatic current MS practice of
repeating a text message as an HTML attachment, needlessly fattening the
file.

Now it seems the digest has gone entirely to attachments, requiring we
open each message one by one instead of just scrolling down as before.
That slows scanning, and raises occasional worries about the odd
worm-sized file.

A non-tech listserv I subscribe to strips all attachments, but I can see
that -- since sharing files and programming is important to a lot of the
discussions here -- the capability might be worth keeping.

Is there some way, voluntary or automatic, to stick to plain text in the
body of the email except when especially needed?
