Is your default LA (code page) set to 850? If your default code page in
AUTOEXEC.TXT in 437 (command CHCP 437), then default LA in XyWrite
should also be 437. At any rate, I've noted the phenomenon you mention
when my default LA=850, which I sometimes do temporarily because
certain printer files expect it while loading.
