Thank you, Kari. I'll take a look at safe surfing applications. I already have everything else on your list.
I'm thinking only of buying the Win 7 software - not a new computer yet - because by the time I need a new computer, Win 7 software may be more difficult to find.
In other words, I'm planning a future move to an OS (Win 7) that's already outdated. This feels like my permanent fate as a Xywrite devotee who lacks tech expertise. Luckily for me, there are many tech savvy people on the List. Reading all your comments has persuaded me that my easiest course after abandoning XP would be to set up Xywrite on XP Mode in Win 7.
There's nothing about Win 8 that sounds remotely attractive to me. (Clearly, even non-Xywrite users aren't attracted to it.) True, I can't rule out the possibility that a future
Win 9 will offer something better (in which case I may be out whatever the
Win 7 software costs me). Who knows, perhaps Win 9 will even allow for a
relatively easy continued use of ancient legacy apps? But I very much
doubt it
Lynn
P.S. Does anyone know what percentage of the List still use XP?

Hello,
"Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool is aligned with the company's anti-malware engines and signatures, and as such the removal tool will continue to be provided for Windows XP through July 14, 2015. However, any PC running Windows XP after April 8, 2014 should not be considered protected as there will be no security updates for the Windows XP operating system. "

That said, how serious the threat is depends largely on your computing habits. If you are very careful when surfing and use a good anti-virus solution and a possibly a firewall, you could continue using XP with reasonable tranquillity. One possible solution would be to use a "safe-surfing application" as the one in COMODO Internet Security (even free edition).
Windows 7 is quite good, but wreaks havoc with an XP setup. A new installation is needed. I you are not in a hurry, buy a new computer only when you intend to put it into good use. Hardware rarely matures like a wine with years, it just gets sour. Advances in Windows may come with Win 9, so skipping Win 8 might not be a bad idea.

I'm in no rush to abandon XP. I don't rely on MS Security Essentials to
protect my computer. And I'm sure it'll be awhile before I need a new
program or a new iteration of an old program that's incompatible with
XP, which I gather still has almost a 30% market share.
But perhaps I should buy Win 7 Pro without delay, so I'll have it ready
to install when I can't put it off anymore.
