One of the attractive features of OS/2 from a curmudgeonly POV is
that the "stupid little pictures" (read Desktop) are entirely
optional. You just comment out a line in CONFIG.SYS and -- poof! --
bye-bye Desktop. You're back to the good old command-driven
interface, but with all the 32-bit, multitasking power still in
place. (If need be, you can load the Desktop mid-session by -- what
else? -- typing a command.) Also, if you want a GUI but lower
overhead, there are 3d-party alternatives. I hardly every use the
Desktop (though I still load it) since I got hold of a nifty little
GUI called Program Commander/2 -- small, clean and user-
configurable.
