I used to do this thing in last minute eBay bidding, where I'd have 3 tabs going for the same auction, with different, escalated bids ready for rapid dispatch if needed. In that last 30 seconds, a second or two matters. You don't want to turn your cards face up until you have to, and no point ceding other bidders an advantage. But that's only 3 tabs, out of maybe 8 or 9. More tabs open than that, and you can't even tell what's there at top of screen. In any case, eBay greatly improved their auction countdown / re-bid screens, to the point where that old maneuver is rarely of value any longer.
It's not just bookmarks that can help keep track of things. The FireFox auto-complete when typing in the address bar often saves me from even having to summon the Bookmarks Manager. A distinctive, remembered phrase can invoke the item and URL that I wanted.

What's the advantage of having 44 tabs open versus, say, seven or
eight
that you're actually using, and closing/reopening the others when you
actually look at them?
