Ahhhh, but the command-line may just be making a comeback.
One of the alternate selections in the current Small Computer Book Club
catalog is _Windows User's Guide to DOS. Using the Command Line in Windows
95/98_. The first paragraph of the precis reads: "It may be true that
MS-DOS is dead as a stand-alone operating system. However, command syntax,
parameters, parsing commands, and troubleshooting are still handled better
from the command line interface than in Windows."
And here's a partial contents:
Getting Started with the Operating System
Command Syntax: Using the DIR Command with Parameters and
Wildcards
Disks and Formatting
Program Files, Data Files, and Subdirectories
Organizing and Managing Your Hard Disk
Seems not so many years ago we were looking at books called _The DOS
User's Guide to Windows_. With almost the same partial contents!
It seems the Great Wheel continues to turn.
