Typing buffer slowdown in 8.1/VB/XP

As I continue testing XyWrite IV under Win 8.1/VirtualBox/XP I have
noticed an intermittent problem whose solution I have no idea how to
approach. The typing buffer gets real slow. At this point, you will
type a letter and it simply will not appear _until the next letter
has been typed or the next command has been executed_. This can make
correcting a simple typing error trying, because you have the wrong
visual feedback on the screen.
It doesn't happen all the time, and I don't know how to get it to
happen. I just notice it for what it's worth.

Any suggestions?
I note that the problem has never occurred in Win 7-64/XP mode. I
would also note that my documents nowadays are mostly small and
un-complex, often with no codes.
