Wazzat? OS X offers two fully functional backup options natively. One
is in the disk utility app. Refer to the red numbers & arrows in the
attached screen shot:

To make a bootable duplicate, do the following:
1. is the internal hardisk, drag it from the finder to "source".
2. is the external hardisk (to which a bootable copy is to be saved),
drag it from the finder to "destination".
3. Click "restore".

That's all there is to it.

To replace a buggered internal HD image by a functional external
image, do the following:

1. With the Mac powered off, plug in the external HD (firewire or USB).
2. Power on the Mac while holding down the alt (option) key.
3. The Mac will boot in a diagnostic mode which offers you a choice of
booting the internal HD image or the external (USN, firewire) image.
Select the external image.
4. When the external image boots, open disk utility.
5. Drag the external HD to "source" and the internal HD to "destination".
6. Click 'restore.

That's all there is to it.

This method produces complete overwrites.

If you need incremental updates and roll-backs to a specific date and
hour, then use Time Machine (native app). Magenta in the attached
screenshot.

Cheers,
