Size (SZ) command quirk?

In XY4.017 DOS, when you define a block of text and then apply say SZ
11PT, a ≪SZ11PT≫ command is inserted at the start of the defined
block, and a ≪SZ whatever≫ is applied at the end of the block to
return to the size that is in effect prior to the block. It's a quick
way, for example, of setting a word that appears in ALL CAPS one point
size smaller to prevent it from looking too large.
The SZ that ends the block is always in inches. No big deal; .167IN
is the same as 12PT (or at least close enough for me.)
BUT: Why is it inserted _twice_: ≪SZ.167IN,.167IN≫ ? I don't see
anything in the documentation about a _second_ value in the SZ
command.
What brings on this inquiry is a particular string of text which is
SZ'd down one point on one line, and SZ'd back up on the next line.
For some reason, the left margin goes bad at that point when the page
is printed. When I replaced the ≪SZ.167IN,.167IN≫ with ≪SZ12PT≫,
it was OK. But I wasn't able to duplicate the problem with a simple
test file, so it may be a subtle combination of things. The document
uses line numbers, which are in their own font and size, and there are
other SZ commands nearby so possibly the line just gets too complex;
it could also be a printer problem (it's a HP LJ4+ PostScript with
10MB).
Any comments on the two SZ values, and the general problem, would be
much appreciated.
