f5 when starting xydos under windows95

i am running xydos 4.017 on an ibm laptop under windows 95. i have xy
start on startup. the first time i hit f5 to get my cursor to the
command line a string one and a half lines long of e (with acute
accent) prints out in the text field of xywrite. this also happens if
the laptop has been in sleep-mode and is then revived: the first f5
produces a line and a half of acute accented ees. any idea how i can
stop this peculiar behavior, short of switching to linux?
