In America, a dictate has come from On High that new autos be
rated for fuel economy in city and highway driving, presumably
for consumer protection and energy conservation. The tests are
run on a chassis dynamometer according to programs of acceleration
and deceleration that are thought to typify these two general
types of driving conditions.
The tests, of course, cannot take into account actual real-world
conditions, individual drivers' motoring brio, etc., and the
results almost always range from slightly to wildly optimistic --
thus the "Your Mileage May Vary" ("might" insists this pedant)
disclaimer. In Internet-speak it has been adopted somewhat
ironically to mean "Well, it works for me."
