Footnotes

XyWin tries to do this in a wizzywiggy sort of way that is a bit confusing
at first and which I've never warmed to. Since @ and # are easily
accessible and seldom if ever have any other use for me, my low-tech manner
of inserting notes (of which I often need a lot) is to start by writing
something like:

Thou by the Indian Ganges side
Should'st Rubies find: I by the Tide
Of Humber@Not the car, but a river in the northeast of England (near where
the poet lived).# would complain.

. . . continuing thus through the entire article. Finally, just before
printing for the first time: CIA ,@,≪FN1. , and CIA ,#,≫,

Having said that . . . I find that footnote placement with XyWin 4.12 and
XyDos four-point-something [I forget] is not good: for no apparent reason,
a note sometimes gets pushed to the next page, sometimes even to the page
after that. I thus often have to fool around with ≪PG≫. By contrast,
XyDos 3.54 (and thereabouts) is flawless. I wonder if I'm the only person
to have made extensive (and I think constructive) use of its ability to
have two clumps of differently formatted footnotes (FN1 and FN2) on the
same page.

[Excuse me if this subject has already been done to death: I wouldn't know
as I'm very new here.]
