After a long hiatus, the Jumbo U2 for XyWrite 4 and Nota Bene for
Windows has a new release -- version 120, dated 19 October 2014 --
available for download at:
http://users.datarealm.com/xywwweb/
Version 120 consolidates hundreds of improvements and additions to
Robert's and Carl's code base, accumulated over the last many years.
Bundled with it are several EXEcutable and other binary files that are
essential to U2's functioning in a 32-bit Windows environment.
Among the new utilities are:
Alarm: An improved CMline utility that allows you to set (multiple)
alarms that display reminders, play a sound file, and/or open Windows
files or applications at the alarm time(s). (Thanks to Harry B. for
prodding me to make the CMline syntax forgiving and flexible.)
AutoSAve: Automatically SAve the file currently being edited --
safely, unobtrusively and in the background, at intervals of your
choosing. U2's AutoSAve is a handy (and potentially "life-saving")
complement to XyWrite's factory-issued Autosave feature.
BigEdit: Edit huge text files -- up to 2 GigaBytes -- in XyWrite 4.
Works transparently; the intuitive BigEdit command set works much the
same as editing any other text file in XyWrite.
Command Stacking and Archiving: (Almost totally) hands-off activation
of Robert's essential command Stack utility, and (totally) hands-off
activation of my new command Archiving feature (UH-HUH), which allows
you to effortlessly save and retrieve tens or even hundreds of
*thousands* of your XyWrite commands. I've been using command
archiving for over a year and have almost 15,000 unique commands in my
disk archive. I find it very handy to be able to summon commands I
issued months earlier whenever the need arises. (And when you have the
archive, you'll find that the need *does* arise.)
LCA*,LCD*,LDEL*,LERNV,LDIR*,LMD,LNE*,LRD*,LRE*,LSA*: A new suite of
LongFilename|LongDirectory commands for the XyWrite CMline,
supplementing U2's already-formidable LFN/SFN capabilities.
OPEN a/k/a PLAY: Open any file (DOC, DOCX, TXT, PDF, WAV, MP#, etc.,
etc.) in its associated Windows application, by pointing at its name
in XyWrite or putting the filename on the CMline. Long file and
directory names are supported. E.g.: OPEN Readme1st.pdf
Quick Start
-----------
Here are Quick-Start Instructions for current Jumbo U2 users (first-
time users should consult README.1ST and REG-READ.ME, in XYWEB120.ZIP):
Step 0
------
Back up your existing copies of XYWWWEB.U2, XYWWWEB.INF, STARTUP.INT,
and your KeyBoarD file.
Step 1
------
UnZip XYWEB120.ZIP into the directory that contains EDITOR.EXE. Be
sure to overwrite all existing copies of the included files. Note that
XYWEB120.ZIP contains a number of freeware EXEcutable and other binary
files that are used by various U2 routines. If you use these routines,
these files are essential. (If you don't, they'll do no harm.)
Step 2
------
Copy any personal U2 programming into the new XYWWWEB.U2, in the space
provided near the Bottom_of_File.
Now: The following Steps 3 and 4 are optional but highly RECOMMENDED
(you can always modify or undo the added features later).
Step 3
------
Add the following line to STARTUP.INT, immediately below the line that
loads U2: JM 2.XyWebU2.intQ2 ;*;
=> SAve STARTUP.INT
Step 3 does mainly the following:
- Identifies the operating system to Editor.exe (you can delete
"JM 2.GetXyOSQ2 " from STARTUP.INT if it's there)
- Initializes the command Stack and modifies your KeyBoarD file
(harmlessly, and only if Stack is not already installed) to enable
command Stacking and archiving (huh? read on) (Don't worry -- your
existing KeyBoarD file is automatically backed up!)
- Enables -- on a hands-off, rolling basis -- background archiving
of the command Stack (new frame HUH), making all commands permanently
retrievable via frame UH (Unlimited Hint)
- Enables intelligent, non-intrusive Automatic SAving (AutoSAve) of
the file currently being edited. This feature complements, but does
not replace, XyWrite's built-int Autosave. Try it, you may like it.
(KBD mod required -- see Step 4 below.) To suspend automatic SAving,
simply put the cursor on the CMline; or toggle into eXPanded view; or
command: A OFF.
Step 4
------
To enable AutoSAving, CAll your KBD file. Change the "KEYS=" line near
the top of the file (it usually says KEYS4 or KEYS5) to: KEYS6 At
end of TABLE=, add new key assignment: 126=$A
=> SAve your KeyBoarD file.
Finally:
Step 5
------
Quit and re-start XyWrite. You're done!
Note to Users of Nota Bene for Windows: Jumbo U2 v120 has not been
tested in recent versions of Nota Bene, including the newly-released
Version 10. We suspect that incompatibilities with NB may have
multiplied with NB's evolution through the various v10 betas over the
last few years, but we're nevertheless eager to hear about your
successes (and, perhaps even more, your frustrations or failures) in
deploying the Jumbo U2 in NB.
Enjoy!
