I couldn't agree more. FWIW, the HTML equivalents of the principal accented
characters in French are:

e w/ acute accent = &eacute;
E w/ acute accent = &Eacute;
e w/ grave accent = &egrave;
c w/ cedilla = &ccedil;
a w/ circumflex = &acirc;
e w/ circumflex = &ecirc;
i w/ circumflex = &icirc;
o w/ circumflex = &ocirc;
O w/ circumflex = &Ocirc;
u w/ grave accent = &ugrave;
