Wouldn't your cheapest option be to buy ...drum roll... XyWin? At
150 bucks for the upgrade, it would seem not more expensive than
any other converter. And while the highest WinWord version it is
able to produce is 2, this would be enough to get your bold and
italics across. And fancy formatting doesn't get converted properly
anyway (at least not with my "Word for Word", which claims it can
produces WinWord 6).
