XyWrite in Linux

I've migrated to Ubuntu Linux version 6.06 on an older Dell Optiplex, and running XyWrite is one of my goals for that computer. I'll try to document the process and share it here, though that may not be soon. My immediate priority is to configure for internet access, which Ubuntu did not do on this particular computer although I've seen it do so easily on others as part of the initial auto-configuration process. I may have an unsupported network card.

If my hardware were newer, I might be trying this on OpenSUSE Linux instead. I've looked at a lot of Linux variants, and Ubuntu and OpenSUSE were the most appealing to me.

As I understand it, there is a Linux module called "DOSEMU" that emulates a DOS environment (another module called WINE emulates a Windows environment). This is true at least for the Debian-based variants of Linux, including Ubuntu. Installing these modules, or "packages" is a very simple matter.
