" My own quick alternative to XyWrite is PCWrite 3.02 (vintage ca. 1987,
" I think). It has the formatting capabilities of XY, and unlike
" earlier versions has an automatic word wrap. Unlike later ones, it is
" extremely compact, and loads on my old 4DX2-66 in a second or less. I
" use it routinely for email messages, since it produces pure ASCII
" output (more so than XY) and puts a hard return at the end of every
" line (which made auto-word-wrap hard to achieve in earlier versions.
" The keyboard is completely customizable, although it doesn't use all
" the key combinations that XY does. Still I have set it up so I can
" use the same keys for most functions in both applications. I use a
" small XPL program within XY to convert in either direction.
" run each application.

PC-Write 2.7, the last good one, is often used here,
despite it's 64 k limit.
Since I came from PC-Write and Chiwriter, I loved and
adapted XY-Write to similar key commands.
PC-write doesn't produce "pure ASCII" when it has
'dot-commands' and the 'Alt-G' text in it, but I know
what you mean, the output is relatively clean.
