Re: Big letter

I've seen some solutions that involve turning off autoleading. That's OK,
but it can look a bit funny unless you also add back leading to that first
line that corresponds to what the text size is.

A better way might be to put the initial cap in a frame. That's what my
routine does in the Enhanced menus/dialogs, available from the ftp site. The
tricky part is the math, which is taken care of in the program. There's also
a way to re-size the initial cap and to align it with the baseline of the
rest of the type. The stick-up and drop caps can be in any available
typeface or style. Size is initially chosen by the number of lines in the
base type, so a specifically 57-point one may take some experimenting. They
work only at the left margin and make a mess when you try them in other
places, like in snaking columns that aren't on the left.

Also, I don't know what PostScript will do with the frame. But for those who
want to do some drop caps or stickup caps with a minimum of fussing, this is
a way to do it. The menus/dialogs are designed to work only with Xy4DOS, and
they can be a little slow on machines slower than 486/66 (they work really
nicely on Pentium 100s and faster). Perhaps others who have the enhanced
stuff can try out this feature and report back -- especially about PS
conversions.
