Harry, it just occurred to me: how are you logged on? I bet port settings
are something you can only change if you're logged in as administrator.
XP, like NT and 2K, is much more network-oriented than 9x and does enable
the sysadmin to block mere users from doing things. Now, of course, if
you're the only one using the PC, you're Pooh-Bah. But XP doesn't know
that.
Mind, this is pure theoretical conjecture. Can anyone who's using XP
successfully recommend a good book on the subject? Microsludge's hype to
the contrary notwithstanding, you cannot just start clicking away and
expect to be able to do anything really deep. (But M$ doesn't WANT you to
do anything really deep.)
