Re: A new version of Win31DOSBox

Hello Edward,

I am still using some custom Type 1 fonts created with Win 3.1 tools
like Fontographer and Fontmonger. As I experienced some odd behavior in
embedding some of fonts in modern applications, I decided to have a look
into the fonts with the tools that were used to build them. I installed
Fontographer, Fontmonger and Fontminder into DOSBox-X. While I have not
done any extensive testing, my feeling is that this version is worse
than the original DOSBoxW3. I had occasional freezes, waiting for
keyboard input getting through, changing focus to and fro problems,
difficulties with Autosizer placement, etc. The original version seems
rock-solid compared to this.

I’ve put together a variant of that system that uses the DOSBox-X variant of DOSBox (by Jonathan Campbell). It’s functionally identical to the original version (fixing one or two very small problems) but it may be more reliable. DOSBox-X is designed to act more like a real computer than the original DOSBox, and this may help Win 3.11 to run more smoothly. The download link is here: http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/Win31DOSBox-X.zip http://www.columbia.edu/%7Eem36/Win31DOSBox-X.zip If you have an existing system, simply copy the C-DRIVE folder from your existing system to the new one, then run Win31DOSBox.exe in the new system. It should work exactly as the old one did. If this turns out to be trouble-free, I’ll replace the original version with the new one.
