Y'all,

I now have a feasible workaround which yields consistent results:

1. Export the file (sheet by sheet) from Excel as tab-delimited .txt files.

2. Open the text files in XY3, Open Office Writer, and Count Anything
utility.

XY3 yields slightly higher counts than the other two programs. XY4
reports much too small word counts (even casual visual inspection
confirms them to be inaccurate).
