Daryl, were you aware that the Washington Post uses XyWrite exclusively on
their over 700 PCs. I spoke with the guy who is in charge of their system.
Seems they worked a deal with XyQuest wherein they (for a hefty price, of
course) gained access to their source code and configured it to run with their
PCs and compositing equipment. An editor can now sit somewhere in the Far East
(for example), write an article, modem it to the Post, and it can literally be
composed, paginated, and hit the streets within 20 minutes if need be!!!
This guy was also present at the famous prize fight that happened at the
Olympics in Korea. His version of what was really going on was far hairy-er
than that communicated by the TV media.
Your ideas sound very interesting. I have friends who work with Unix, and
they swear it will be the operating system of tomorrow. But, I guess with DOS
around, it'll be an uphill fight -- and against Microsoft and IBM, to boot.
Keep on truckin'.
