Those conversion filters are far from lousy. Word for Word
is actually an incredibly well thought out, efficient, well supported product.
The problem is, XyWrite's formatting continues until replaced by
another triangle; since other programs do not have this feature,
the Word for Word filters deliberately build in redundancies.
Here's a workaround I use all the time. Replace all the mode
commands temporarily with, say, ascii 3-7, for italics, bold,
superscripts, subscripts and normals. Then replace the open
chevron, wildcard string (alt+shift+w) and close chevron with
nothing. This gets rid of all the triangles. Then restore the
mode commands. All triangles will then be gone, and you can
insert your own margins, indents, etc. etc. etc.
The program would look something like this (using here, two angle
brackets to represent the chevrons and numbers to represent the
ASCII characters
). BC ci /≪MDIT≫/3/XC BC . . . ci /≪WW≫//XC BC . . . ci
/3/≪MDIT≫/XC
BC.
