I'm not sure where you get your information, but Linux and FreeBSD
support unicode, BeOS supports unicode, MacOS with the C/J/K Language
Kits supports unicode, Plan 9 supports unicode, and -- according to
IBM -- OS/2 will have unicode support in the next release (and I
believe the OS/2 port of X-Windows supports it already).

We have three Macs, a BeBox, a FreeBSD box, and several PCs running
variously the Japanese and English versions of OS/2, Windows95, and
WindowsNT, all networked through server running a double-byte-
compliant version of Warp Server Advanced 4 with IBM's LAN Manager for
Macintosh add-on. (We have a license for Plan 9 as well, though it's
not currently installed on anything.) The Macs are used for (among
other things) Japanese, Chinese (traditional and simplified), and
Korean layout. Lots of reasons for us to bother with it. Your
mileage may vary.
