In the XY4 SETTINGS.DFL file, there's a default settings line
that reads df lh=75,45,25
lh stands for low-high, and the settings specify the size and
baseline for supercscript and subscript characters in the
Bitstream Speedo fonts.
Your numbers may be different, but what those in this example
mean is that superscript and subscript characters are to be in
type that is 75% the size of the regular text type (9-point in
the case of 12-point text type). Superscript text will be set
45% of 9 points (4.09 points) up from the baseline, and subscript
type will be set 25% of 9 points (2.25 points) below the
baseline.
Changing the numbers will change the footnote type size relative
to the base type size, and the baseline for superscript and
subscript, respectively.
