Interesting article, Brian. I especially enjoyed the photos. I PDF'd
it for future reference.
I'm unfussy when it comes to keyboards. For desktop computing, my
only requirements are standard layout, light weight (my keyboard
usually sits on my lap), and no loud clicks. The factory-issued Dell
model works fine for me.
My "grail" keyboard for mobile computing (to use as an external
keyboard with my netbook) would be the same, but without the second
set of navigation keys to the left of the Numpad. If anyone knows of
such a thing, I'd love to know where it can be found. All the
compact keyboards I've seen have a laptop-style "Fn" key -- which is
exactly what I want to avoid. I suppose I could try a folding
keyboard, but they look so flimsy to me.
An amazing little thing, that Acer netbook. A fully-fledged Windows
computer, 160 GB hard drive, wireless (and wired) connectivity (of
course), etc. etc. -- for three hundred bucks. You wouldn't want to
write your next magnum opus on it (hence the need for an external
keyboard), but for staying connected on the road -- checking email,
surfing the web, posting short notes, etc. -- it's extremely handy.
XyWrite 4 runs nicely on it.
