Daniel Say raises several questions that deserve answers:
1. Why isn't the Xylist on any other lists?
Because no one has tried to put it on, perhaps because it is a subscription
list that most of the world sees correctly as catering to an odd and
eccentric interest.
2. Where are the web pages for Altavista, Yahoo etc. engins to find?
There aren't any, aside from the single page that gives links to
XyWrite-related web pages (http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/~hss/xylink.htm).
An Internet list is designed for discussion. A web page is designed to
present canned information (in this case, links); fancier ones permit
searching databases, etc. TG has a web page, since they have something to
advertise, although I note that it has recently disappeared, and even TG's
email address no longer works. I have written KF about this, and perhaps
eventually they will reappear.
When this topic came up about a month ago, I made it clear that if someone
wants to design a web page that does something useful for XyWrite users,
they are more than welcome to do so, as Distefano & Holmgren and Fisher
have already done. If a server is needed, I can probably provide one at
CCAT. It doesn't give you the flexibility of your own account, but it's
free. That is something to contact me privately about.
3. And also why, when I do reply to a message to the list, does the reply
go to the person only and not the list (or also to the list)?
That is a matter of how you have set up your comm program. I use Eudora
Lite 2.03 with WindowsFW 3.11. When I hit ctrl-r or the corresponding
"reply" button, my reply to your message to the list goes to you, and the
return address is mine. When I hit the "reply to all" button, the "To:"
line reads "Daniel Say , xywrite@xxxxxxxx". That
gives you two copies. Eudora lets me reduce that to one, but I just haven't
changed the default. Eudora does not have a key combination or a
configuration option to let ctrl-r reply to everyone.
On the other hand, Crosstalk Communicator, the outmoded, simple DOS program
I use for more direct access, automatically replies to the list. That's
one of the things I like about it.
Your manual may clarify what the options for your own program are.
Cheers,
