But I thought T-bird was supposed to be the basis for the new Eudora? Or
is that yet another empty promise? I tried T-bird a couple of years ago
and found it awful, but much will have changed.

in Eudora .MBX files as much as one likes, with no real damage
threatened. I'd close Eudora first, of course. Eudora offers to re-index
altered .MBX files when it is re-launched.

What about converting Eudora *.MBX files to Thunderbird? There are a few
programs that claim to do that. It sounds as if all you have to do is
search and replace to exchange the "From ???@???" to "From
- Tue Oct 20".

Yes, that seems to be what it does, reliably. But there is no
blank line preceding it, just the CR/LF pair ending the content of the
previous message.
