Tim, regarding the resolution setting, can't you set the printer to
override what the printer driver gives you?
You can certainly in XY set an HP printer for at least 600 dpi.
E.g., in my hp4-plus.prn is the following:
; PRINTER INFORMATION
;add @PJL SET RESOLUTION=600? to force 600DPI
;add &u300D for units of measure
;add @PJL ENTER LANGUAGE=PCL to set HP mode for EPS
B<%-12345X@PJL SET RESOLUTION=600
@PJL ENTER LANGUAGE = PCL
