Let's find out if this is real first. ≫ --Carl
Carl--Your claim of relevance notwithstanding, how about, "let's discuss
DOSiX with the DOSiX newsgroup and xyWrite with the xylist?" With all due
respect, my reaction when I read your first msg was kneejerk: Anybody who
expects to find reliable OS info on the 'net deserves all the grief s/he
gets. Trade mags are online and their survival depends on timely
reporting of *credible* news. Nothing I see in the xylist charter
mentions OSes.
The elusive SmartWords (remember SmartWords?) aside, there's still life
left in xyWrite if anybody cares to discuss it rather than OSes or spam.
xylist msgs about spam are as welcome in my mailbox as the spam they
sandwich. Duh. The online NYTimes CyberTimes stays on top of that
particular topic but is so Mac-smitten that most of what's there is a
laugh (one columnist now assures clueless readers that browsers are
OSes).
Carlo's msg about making up special-purpose modes otoh seemed to me the
kernel of an interesting *XyWrite* discussion. Printer drivers have all
sorts of offbeat applications that are discussed here rarely if ever.
E.g., as I've said repeatedly, I replaced my PostScript driver's entire
fb< with a Windows graphical app's PostScript prolog. Lets me use raw PS
coding to draw in xyW3 and integrate EPS files with low overhead. And my
html<>xyCodes conversion system uses a print-to-disk html.prn I wrote for
down & dirty ci's. Somewhere I have a similar xyW->Quark driver that I
plan to dig out and work on again when I get a minute. Getting modes,
fonts, and whatnot sorted out in such drivers is a real challenge. Has
PCL dulled everybody to the possibilities? Anybody doing *anything*
innovative with xyWrite? --a
