You don't have to close Word, but you will have to close the file.
While any Microsoft application has a file open, its hooks are sunk
deeply into all related files, including *.BAK copies. Try even copying
a data file for Access or Excel while it's open in the application--you
have to close the file before you can do *anything* with it.
