Re: NBWin 5.003 Arrives

Since we're reporting our results...

I ordered NB via the web on 10/2. On 10/4 (a Monday) I got an inquiry
from customer service because I hadn't checked any boxes and they
weren't sure what flavor I wanted. I replied, and got no further
confirmation.

The charge on my credit card was posted on 10/12/99 (I haven't been
billed yet, but I can check items not yet billed via the web) and the
package arrived on Tuesday.

The program seems pretty stable under WIN98 2d Edition, less so under
NT4.0 SP3. My meager set of programs and templates all work fine, with
minor modifications, but my dialog boxes display 'unexpected' behaviors,
and may not prove useful at all. On the other hand, I can get most of
the functionality they provided via other methods, so that's no tragedy.

NB is oddly limited, without implemented graphics menus, etc., but still
a better and more complete windows program than XYWIN. Try dragging a
file and dropping it onto the NB icon, for example. Still no COM (Ole)
interface, but overall, much more of a well behaved windows program. And
having XYWrite knowledge helps make up for the lack of documentation.

For example, the envelope routine stores return addresses. It does not
allow you to format anything other than the font. But you can edit the
nb-env.ini file and put in an command. You just have to know where
to look, and how to add format commands directly.

I'll probably bite on Smartwords, as well, to see if the menus are more
complete, and if my dialogs work. But NB will become my 'supported' text
editing environment. Yeah, the support is limited and slow, but it
exists.
