Mr Edwards;

Sorry; did you accidently post your request(s) to the wrong list?
Your questions [Non Xywrite] have been asked here before and
discussed and answered [previously].

A better place to find answers your non Xywrite questions would be the following
internet Newsgroups

alt.windows95 or
alt.windows98 and
alt.comp.virus

Here are some questions you need to answer before you post to either of those
newsgroups so the respondents can frame a sensible non flaming reply.

What operating system are you currently running?
On what spec computer?
What software?
Succinctly what you actually want to do!

>>>
Becoming Windows-free could make life a bit difficult if you want to run
DOS programs such as XyWrite, and you also want to use more recent things such
as Internet browsers or e-mail.
>>>

If you were running DOS surely DOS programs by definition would run more easily.
Browsers and Email are hardly "recent" in the time frame of computing.
It seems that your use of Microsoft Outlook Express 4.72.2106.4
works well enough for you. Why do you want to change?

Why do you want to be "Windows free"?
Do you currently run PC DOS or a "Windows" machine of some kind?
What do you currently DO with your computer(s)?
What software do you run?
What do you WANT to run?
What do you WANT to do with your computer(s)?

>>>
Do you think the best thing would be to run two
computers: one running on DOS (not Windows), for any DOS programs, then another
running on Linux (or possibly Macintosh)?
>>>

Ever heard of networks? Have you ever used a non DOS Op Sys?

>>>
It would be interesting to know how many list members use it with DOS
(completely without Windows), and how many use it with one variety of Windows or
another,
>>>

This also has been discussed [previously]. I believe the answer is that most of
this list use Xywrite perfectly well on a huge variety of operating systems
everyday with minimal problems considering the age of the program! Surely that
is testament to the quality of the Xywrite program (and it's designers) AND to
the configurability of a variety of operating systems that allow a very old DOS
program to coexist on even the most modern Op Sys (XP Pro with a number of VERY
recent links have been posted on THIS very list) with remarkably few problems.
All software, even the most recent has "bugs".

>>>
If not Norton, can you recommend a couple of other good ones?
>>>

Take a pin and pick one. Almost ANY of the main ones, for which there are
endless reviews in every computer magazine you care to open, are BETTER
than nothing if you technical ability is not so hot. Antivirus is another "mines
better than yours" zealot argument. At the end of the day, something is better
than nothing (for most people)!

>>>
I'm not running any anti-virus program at all, and am just paranoid about
opening attachments
>>>

You already KNOW the answer to that one so that must have been a rhetorical
question, right?

>>>
I suppose my own non-use of them so far is due to a general distrust of Windows,
and a reluctance to make my computer any more complex than it already is.
>>>

Michael if you are going to ask such questions give us all the gory details of
WHAT you do currently run as above but this list is not really the place for
beginner Op Sys 101. It's for asking Xywrite questions with a few interesting
diversions like the recent copyright series.

I'm quite serious. If you phrase your questions carefully and in succinct detail
the news groups I have listed above will answer ALL your non Xywrite questions.

You really just HAVE to take it as an article of faith that Xywrite WILL run
reliably on most any operating system. The answers are in the archive!

If you fail to accept this as your emails suggest perhaps you need to try
some OTHER word processor. There are lots of them. Just use that pin and go pick
one!

Cheers

Neville
