Hi Jordan,
There are indeed some differences regarding printing between the 2015.11.01 branch and the 2016.06.01 branch of vDos-lfn. For example, when you use the 2016.06.01 branch of vDos-lfn with the default setting, and trying to printing something inside vDos-lfn to LPT1 will cause in the print job to be sent to your default printer directly. If you want to make the Windows printing dialogue box show up instead, you need to set LPT1=SEL in config.txt. On the other hand, you don't need to do this in the 2015.11.01 branch of vDos-lfn. Of course it could be a good idea to set up the printing options in the installer, and perhaps Kari might want to look at this too, but I do think printing with the default settings in vDos-lfn should already work fine in many (most?) cases.

Hi Wengier,
Ah, good. I wasn't aware of that.
Somewhere in my disc collection I have a multi-OS cd with various versions of 4DOS and Take Command (an enhanced, graphical cousin of 4DOS) on it, though that is probably circa the late 1990s.
I don't know yet, because I haven't gotten that far yet, but the printing differences between the -LFN branches may yet prove significant for me. In trying to use the earlier (? original ?) VDOS, which I put with Xy on at least three machines, the one really important thing that I never really sorted out and missed was the printing capability. The VDOS installer that pretty much resolves that out of the box -- in different computer situations -- would be a major cause for celebration. I don't expect that to be easy, as some of the printing scenarios are wireless.

Hi Jordan,
4DOS is an integral part of vDos-lfn, so if you use vDos-lfn then DDIR and other similar U2 frames will work out of the box without the need to perform any extra steps (e.g. you don't need to worry about the version of 4DOS at all). Hope this helps.

Does the version of 4DOS matter ?

Hi Carl,
Thanks. It works out of the box in vDos-lfn.

U2 now includes a new frame, DDIR*, which uses 4DOS (if available) to
produce directory listings including long filenames. The usage is:
DDIR[/switch(es)] [filespec(s)]
Also, note that two existing frames, LCA and S, work in
"point-and-shoot" mode against a "bare" directory listing. Thus, if
you command:
DDIR/B *.txt *.pdf
you can then point at any .txt file in the listing and command
DCA to CAll it, or point at any .pdf file and use S
to open it in the default Windows application.
