Will there ever come a day when we can use a machine without having to
have knowledege of it - as opposed to the task we want to do with it?
The fundamental principle of the Macintosh is to do just that. Everyone
disagrees on how well the classic Mac OS (which
Apple is desperately trying to ditch) succeeds, but one certainly
comes to the Mac with a greater sense that the technology is
not fighting one. I give just one example, which goes beyond
the actual machines and their software, and underlines the
different philosophies of the companies: if you have a technical
problem, and go to the MS website, will never find the solution,
even if it's for something as simple as how to create a startup
disk in XP. But if you go to Apple's website, and search for an
answer to your problem, it is striking how often you will find
what you're looking for. All of which underlines how lucky we
are to have this forum for what might be called the XyWrite
platform.
