I'm pretty sure at least one such study was done, and found more
correlations than mere random factors could account for. But possible
mechanisms were pretty speculative, so sceptics were free to dismiss it
with Disraeli's gibe about "lies, damned lies, and statistics."
Robert, thanks for the examples; there were several there I had never
thought of. You might also have cited Wainwright, though only you might
know what the difference is between a cart and a wain.
