Many thanks, Kari, I will try those suggestions out. I would also
observe that although Win2K doesn't have ClearType it does have some
effective prior font enhancement technology, though I don't know
whether it affects DOS programs.
Going back to the lack of directories for the host drive, I think
there is a good chance this is due to my ignorance of networking
technology and I wonder if you have any suggestions for a checklist
of correct network settings on VBox and more importantly the host
system. Keep in mind that I did not install XP from scratch in this
instance, but simply employed someone's pre-existing image, which
could have any number of unknown and scarcely knowable problems. So
that is something I need to investigate further.

You can get at least 1024x768 in any configuration using VirtualBox,
probably more. To configure VirtualBox screen size go to fullscreen
(host+F), Desktop context menu, display settings. Make sure you have
VirtualBox additions installed. In this dialog, you should have
'VirtualBox Graphics Adapter'. I use a multi-display configuration
to run virtualization solutions, for VirtualPC and VirtualBox I have
4:3 ratio Samsung 21 inch display at 1024x768. Font rendering and
graphics are quite adequate. Then again I do not complain about the
rather rugged aspect of the Win 3.1 Quark display, when I print it
to a PS file and distill it to a PDF, the result is picture-perfect
on the Win 7 side. In this case the Win 3.1 display is just a sketch
of things that materialize on the other side, on the screen or on paper.

Needless to say, these observations are only based on my limited
experience with the limited instances of W2K and XP I am using. For
example, the W2K I am using, as vanilla installed, will only go up
to 800x600 for its virtual screen, whilst XP (along with VB)
immediately knows that it is on a hi-dpi screen and adjusts
accordingly. Perhaps if I knew more about Win2K I would be able to
overcome this limitation, but as far as I know, nothing will bring
ClearType font rendering to Win2K.
