I know what you want to do and why you want to do it. I put the code for
the common mode commands (including MDNM, of course) onto key assignments
in the ".kbd" file. When I want to start a bold stretch, I hit Control-b,
and at the end of the stretch I hit Control-n. I have also put onto key
assignments a more complicated coding (a mini-program) that takes care of
mode-modification of words already in the text. I put the cursor anywhere
within a word and hit Control-b and the word is nicely emboldened before
my delighted eyes. The simpler version can be used with already written
words (or other strings) too, just by moving the cursor to the beginning
of the word, typing Control-b (or whatever), and then moving to the end
to type Control-n. You should check out the mode commands given in the
Customization Guide for Xy4, if you have not already done so.
