Not only that, but when your CMOS battery dies (and they may only be good for a year or so), it's not just a matter of putting a new coin-type battery in, and re-inputting any lost CMOS settings: your Windows can then be flagged as a pirated copy, requiring you to get it authorized again. Much the same thing has been known to happen when changing some components, like video cards. (This should not apply to laptop users.)Jordan

Since XP, MS OSs have grown progressively more oppressive as regards serials and activation, and it is not unheard of for legitimate copies to have activation problems.
