They are different. I tried using just any old .fon and usually Windows
won't load. Windows uses three kinds of system fonts: to quote from the WFW
technical manual:

"System is a proportional font used by default to draw menus, dialog box
controls and other text in Windows 3.x.." Most people's system font (as seen
in the system.ini) is called "vgasys.fon" or "8514sys.fon."

"Fixed is a fixed-width font used in Windows 2.x and earlier versions as the
system font (for menus and dialog boxes)." Most people's fixed font is
called vgafix.fon or 8514fix.fon.

"OEM font, or Terminal, is a fixed-width font used to display the OEM
text...the OEM font also provides an OEM character set used by some
Windows-based applications." Most people's OEM font is called "vgaoem.fon"
or "8514oem.fon."

The thing is, the OEM font -- the actual vgaoem.fon or 8514oem.fon files --
are delivered with your video card (which is why, I guess, they call it
OEM). That's why different video cards display the XyWin draft font
differently. My old machine at home had a nearly unreadable OEM font. The
fonts in the "woafon14" package seem to have the proper structure and file
headers or whatever it takes, to be recognized as OEM fonts, even though
they don't come packaged with a video card. That was the missing link.

  So couldn't you just substitute any number of *.fon in there?? Or are
those in that woafon14.zip package somehow different?
