A simple CHange command is fine if your document doesn't
have any nested guillemets, e.g., formatting within
headers or footers. If it does, it will bomb. It will
also make a dog's breakfast of long commands, such as
footnotes and elaborate SaveStyle commands.
The Jumbo U2 has a routine called DAF (Delete All
Formatting), which cleanly removes everything, including
nested material, between command brackets (guillemets).
Everything means everything, including footnotes,
non-printing NoTes, LaBels, etc., so if you have any
embedded text that you want to preserve, you have to
export it to a separate file first with another routine,
DUMPEM.
Another option the Jumbo U2 offers is DEFORMAT, which
turns embedded formatting commands into plain-English
formatting instructions (enclosed in curly braces). The
philosophy there is to let the person at the receiving
end worry about translating those instructions into
actual formatting, using his or her program of choice.
DAF and DUMPEM are for Xy4 and later only; maybe Annie
has something comparable for v3. DEFORMAT is designed to
work in any flavor of Xy, including v3; v3 users will
have to copy it from U2 to a separate file and RUN it.
