It might help us to know what she means by "i tried to append some
quotes from another disk" -- what she actually did, step by step, if
she can remember.
> I usually work with store, not save
Meaning she doesn't perform intermediate SAves of her work while
she's writing? If so, not good. Another question is, how does she
"work with store"? Just a plain ST command or ST [filename]? The
latter is usually unnecessary, but if she issued ST PROFILE with a
directory listing on screen (intending to STore her profile file)
and answered the Overwrite prompt with "Y"es, that would be tough,
because the contents of her profile file would've been replaced with
the directory listing. Which, unfortunately, sounds like what
happened.
To Robert's warning about floppies I'd add this advice: keep
multiple *current* copies of important files on different drives,
preferably on different machines (or on a Web server). For an
ongoing project I do that at least once a day. It only takes a
second, and is well worth the peace of mind.
A further thought: There is a shareware DOS utility, called
Anadisk, that can, among other things, "dump" the raw contents of a
diskette to a file. It can be downloaded here:
http://www.pcxt-micro.com/download.html
This may not work with newer hardware, but is still worth a try.
You may be surprised at what you find (if the program works at all,
that is). There may be big chunks of the profile left on the
diskette that could be salvaged.
Good luck.
